LOS ANGELES—Emergency response authorities on Thursday urged Californians to take earthquake preparedness seriously and plan on having to take care of themselves for up to 2 weeks in the event of a disaster.
The experts drew attention to the issue of personal readiness in advance of the October 21 "Great California ShakeOut," an annual statewide earthquake drill in which millions of people are expected to dive under desks and tables at the same time to practice the drop, cover and hold technique for surviving a temblor.
"During an earthquake is not the best time to be thinking, 'Wow, I should have been prepared,'" Dr. Paul Myers, a preparedness official with the American Red Cross, told a gathering at a Los Angeles County Fire Department training facility.
Fire Department Chief Deputy John Tripp also noted the day was the eve of the 23rd anniversary of the magnitude-5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake, which killed 8 people and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
